Established in 2009, the Indian Institute of Management Ranchi is the only new IIM to be categorized by T.I.M.E. as AAA+ at par with older IIMs like IIM I, IIM K, IIM S and a few other top-performing B-schools in India. It has not only grabbed a spot in the NIRF Ranking for the past few years but also grabbed the spotlight by being one of the top 10 MBA institutes in India for three consecutive years in the Outlook rankings. IIM Ranchi is currently operating from its new state-of-the-art campus located at Prabandhan Nagar, Nayasarai, Ranchi. The institute has a satellite campus offering executive programs at the National Institute for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, Hyderabad.

Talking about course-wise offerings, IIM Ranchi started with an MBA program and later introduced two more postgraduate programs- Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management in 2012 and Master of Business Administration in Business Analytics in 2021. The institute introduced a PG-Integrated program, Integrated Programme in Management, in 2021 with a motive to sharpen young minds directly after completing their Class 12th board exams. Along with that, IIM Ranchi offers an Executive-Doctoral programme and a full-time Doctoral programme in management. IIM Ranchi admissions are based on entrance exams like CAT and GMAT.

With a motive towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, IIM Ranchi is primarily focused on two SDGs: SDG 3 (Health and Well-being) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Our Take:

IIM Ranchi has been constantly ranked in the NIRF Ranking and Outlook in the past three years, however, the institute has been stepped down by a few positions, from 15th rank in 2022 to 24th rank in 2023. On the other hand, it has jumped up three places from 10th in 2021 to 7th in 2022 and 2023. As the ranking parameters are different for both ranking bodies, considering the NIRF ranking parameters, the institute needs to work on the perception parameter as it has shown a gradual decline in scores for the last five years, from 39.92 in 2019 to 31.50 in 2023.

IIM Ranchi Academia and Batch Size

Academic Composition

MBA program at IIM Ranchi is divided into 6 terms. The first year comprises core courses, followed by elective courses in the 2nd year from various management areas. The elective courses are worth 3 credits each. Students must mandatorily complete a summer internship project for 8 weeks between the 1st and 2nd years. The total credits required to graduate, including the summer internship project is 117. IIM Ranchi IPM program is divided into 9 terms spread over 3 years. The students must compulsorily complete a SIIP (Social Internship Immersion Program) after the 5th term. Students at the end of the third year must have a minimum of 4.5 CGPA at the capstone assessment to be promoted to the MBA program. The regular MBA curriculum is followed in the 4th and 5th year.

Batch Size

As per the NIRF Report 2024, 830 students are enrolled in the MBA, MBA HR, MBA BA and Executive MBA programs and 115 students are granted admission to the IPM program. Our Take

IIM Ranchi curriculum is updated as per the standards. Furthermore, students have opined that the admission process is fair and transparent, and the students enrolled in each batch are optimal. Moreover, for every batch, the students’ backgrounds are a mix of freshers and experienced personnel, allowing everyone to learn from each other. Fee-wise, considering the quality of education and placement/internship statistics, the expenses are worth it! Besides, IIM Ranchi offers a total of 25 scholarships for students, out of which some of them are merit-cum-means scholarships exclusively for academically outstanding students who are financially poor.

IIM Ranchi Infrastructure

Classrooms

IIM Ranchi academic block has 10 classrooms equipped with computers, projectors, updated sound systems, OHPs, Wi-Fi/LAN, interactive writing pads, CCTV surveillance facility, and other audio-visual tools.

Library

IIM Ranchi Library, the Learning Resource Centre, is automated and is managed by the VTLS Virtual Library Management Software integrated with RFID Technology. The library is equipped with books, magazines, newspapers, CDs/DVDs, e-journals, e-databases, e-books, e-dissertations, e- newspapers & magazines, and e-research materials. 

Internet

IIM Ranchi has a Wi-Fi and wired LAN with 100 Mbps 1:1 internet bandwidth provided by Railtel. The institute is also a part of the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and has 1 Gbps connectivity. NKN is a pan-India network implemented by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Internet in hostels is provided from the main campus via Fibre Optic cable with Radio Frequency (RF) redundancy.

Computer Labs 

IIM Ranchi’s Suchana Bhawan campus has a Computer Lab with a seating capacity of 40 users. Apart from that, Khelgaon Hostel has a computer centre facility with 25 workstations providing access to the latest academic software 24x7.

Sports

IIM Ranchi has a mega-sports complex called the Khelgaon Sports Complex. The sports complex is updated with the latest sports equipment and facilities. There are coaches available for each sport. All the college fests and sports competitions are held in the sports complex.

Hostels

IIM Ranchi is situated at the residential block of the sports village Khelgaon. The housing facility consists of separate accommodation blocks for girls and boys with each flat consisting of 3 seater and 4 seater fully-furnished bedrooms. IIM Ranchi is the only new IIM providing single accommodation from day 1. The hostel rooms are installed with intercoms, voice and data ports for telephone, campus LAN, Internet, housekeeping services, mess and a canteen.

Cafeteria/Hang-out Areas

IIM Ranchi has a cafeteria open till 3-4 am providing munchies like parathas, Maggi, ice-creams, etc. The campus also has a restaurant where students can indulge in, from fast foods to full-time meals.

Our Take

Analyzing the IIM Ranchi internship data, it is evident that the opportunities provided to students are very good. The stipend received by the students is also exciting with the highest average stipend of INR 1,23,544 offered to the MBA-HR batch 2022-2024. MBA 2022-24 batch witnessed a 15.4% increase in average stipend which further indicates the students are provided with better opportunities to improve their real-time practical skills.

Our Take

The data above depicts that IIM Ranchi placements have shown tremendous growth over the years. In 2023, the institute recorded a 62.3% increase in the number of companies visiting and a 7.2% increase in the average CTC for MBA batch 2021-23. For MBA-HR batch, there was a 4.2% increase in average CTC.

Analyzing the data above, it is evident that 91.51% of students studying in IIM Ranchi are from outside Jharkhand. It signifies that the institute has the needed exposure and more students from other parts of India are willing to take admission in IIM Ranchi.

IIM Ranchi Faculty and Administration/Management

As per the official website, IIM Ranchi has a unique faculty model that encompasses a mix of resident and visiting faculty from top B-schools like IIT, IIM ABC, FMS, etc. Students are taught using collaborative learning techniques. The faculty at IIM Ranchi provides skill-based learning, one-to-one interactions and emphasizes more on cognitive activities inside the classroom. Our Take:

IIM Ranchi has a total faculty count of 60 along with visiting faculty. With a total of 945 students, the student-to-faculty ratio is satisfactory at 16:1 ratio. The table shows that the number of assistant professors is more than that of permanent professors indicating frequent transfers of teaching staff. However, as per students’ experiences shared on online platforms, the quality of teaching is never compromised. The professors at IIM Ranchi are highly educated and provide the requisite and updated knowledge, both theoretical and skill-based.

Our Take

Data shows that IIM Ranchi has adequate staff both on a payroll and contractual basis to carry out the administrative activities of the institute. There is no post vacant, which also indicates that administrative works that are important for students like releasing important notifications, exam registration, declaration of results etc. are carried out smoothly. Students have also opined that they have not encountered any such grave discrepancies in this aspect. They further added that the office staff displays professional behaviour at the workplace and most of their queries are being solved on time.

IIM Ranchi Location

IIM Ranchi is nestled at  Prabandhan Nagar, Nayasarai Road in Jharkhand. The closest bus stop,  Ranchi Iti Bus Stop, is at a distance of 8.2 km via  Bajra-Baitu Road. IIM Ranchi is at a proximity of 4 km and 7 km from the Ranchi Railway Junction and Birsa Munda Airport, respectively.

Our Take

IIM Ranchi is at a prime location easily accessible by roads, rails and airways. The location puts IIM Ranchi in a better spot in terms of placement as well. Location plays an important role in attracting top recruiters from India and abroad. Recruiters prefer those b-schools like IIM Ranchi that are well-connected as compared to those institutes where travelling is a complex task. 

IIM Ranchi Expectation vs Reality- College Dekho Verdict

Of all the aspects IIM Ranchi is famous for, students have appreciated the quality of teaching. Distinguished professors like Shri Pramod Agrawal (Retd. IAS, Former CMD - Coal India Limited.), and Shri Suresh Prabhu (Former Union Minister, Government of India) visit the campus on a regular basis. Library, labs, and classrooms are equipped with modern technologies. The internships and placement statistics are outstanding as well. If we look at the NIRF Ranking of IIMs in the management category, IIM Ranchi is in the 12th spot and in the 7th spot out of the New IIMs ranked by NIRF in 2023.
