In India, students across the country aspire to join an engineering course for their graduate degree. Having a B.Tech degree in any specialisation lands the holder with a good package and sustainable career. However, some students wish to pursue a higher education programme, viz a Masters programme. Yes, it is possible for a B.Tech student to pursue programmes that are not related to an M.Tech degree. Master of Science Vs Master of Technology?
Both postgraduate programmes are conducted for a duration of two years in different specialisations. And the first difference comes in the discipline of the degrees, i.e. a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree is a degree under the discipline of Science. Meanwhile, a Master of Technology (M.Tech) degree is a degree under the discipline of Engineering. Eligibility Criteria of M.Sc and M Tech
If you are eyeing one of the postgraduate courses in either science or engineering, you will be required to meet the eligibility criteria for M.Sc and M.Tech courses in India.
- For both Master of Science and Master of Technology courses, the eligibility criteria require the candidates to possess a graduate degree, preferably in the same field and discipline as the one they choose to pursue.
- However, in almost all the colleges that offer the programmes, the candidates need to have obtained a minimum aggregate score of 55% or above.
- Many institutes and colleges across the country take admission to the different science or engineering programmes based on the marks obtained by the candidate in some sort of an entrance test, that is conducted by the varsity themselves or at the national level.
- Candidates need to appear for Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), which is applicable for admission to the M.Tech programmes in various educational institutes.
- However, aspiring candidates must note that every institute or college or university that offers different M. Tech programmes take admission based on the performance or the rank obtained by the student in GATE alone.
- Many universities and institutes conduct their own entrance tests, in order to take admission in those institutes. Therefore, before applying for the admission to any of the institutes, it is imperative that the candidates check out the eligibility criteria and other requirements of each institute.

The list does not contain all of the entrance tests that are conducted in the different universities and institutes that offer various M.Tech programmes in India. It is advisable for all the candidates to check the admission criteria of each of the institutes or universities that they wish to pursue higher education in. It should also be noted that many of the institutes take into consideration GATE scores across the country. The state-level entrance tests will only be applicable for the institutes situated in those states alone. For instance, AP PGECET will only be applicable for engineering institutes that are located in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Scope of Pursuing M.Sc and M.Tech
One of the major reasons as to why the students pursue higher education after completing their undergraduate programmes is to simply increase the chances of bagging a good job at the end of the day. Therefore, pursuing either a Master of Science or a Master of Technology programme in any field will directly help the students in getting a good position and a good package along with the position.
However, there is no denying that a student with an M.Tech degree will have a better chance and better scope. The reason as to why M. Tech will be better than M.Sc after B.Tech is for the simple reason that the change in discipline from Technology to Science at the postgraduate level. The candidates must note that the requirement of the industry at the time of their completion of higher education will determine if the course or programme that they pursued will be of any good. Based on the requirements of the industry and society, the student will be offered different job opportunities.
Although, pursuing an M.Sc after completing B.Tech programme does not drop your chances and your chances of getting a good job are just as high. The discipline requires the students to have an aptitude for research and study, the importance of such a graduate in different companies will depend on the need of the industry. However, M.Sc graduates are also in high demand, as many companies need specialists who are able to determine the next set of goals and understand market behaviour etc.
Therefore, to determine whether or not pursuing an M.Sc or an M.Tech after completing your B.Tech programme depends majorly on the requirements of the industry. It should also be noted that determining which is better, varies depending on the specialisation that has been chosen by the candidate. The job opportunities that open up after completing both M.Sc and M.Tech will be completely different, as one would attract jobs that are prominently skill-specific, i.e. M.Tech and the other will attract more noticeably research-based jobs, i.e. M.Sc. Therefore, the real difference will be whether or not the interested candidate wants to build a career that is more research-oriented than skill-oriented or vice-versa.
