The stream of Design has gained immense popularity in the last decade. The National Institutes of Design (NIDs) are considered to be the top choices of candidates aspiring to pursue higher education in design. These institutes offer design programmes in various specialisations at both UG and PG levels. 

There are a total of seven NID campuses across India in Ahmedabad, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. NID DAT 2024 exam is scheduled to be held on December 24, 2023, for BDes and MDes programmes. After the declaration of NID DAT Result the candidates will have to attend the counselling session. Note: Initially, NID Vijayawada, Bhopal, Kurukshetra, and Jorhat used to offer the degree of GDPD (Graduate Diploma Programme in Design) but these seats were converted to BDes seats 2020 onwards. Now, all NID campuses offer BDes courses.

Eligibility Criteria for NID Admissions 2024

Criteria based on schooling 

  • The candidate must have passed class 12 or other equivalent exams to be eligible for this course.
  • They should have completed their 12th from a recognised board of education. 
  • Candidate must secure passing marks in all the subjects of class 12.

Upper age limit 

  • Applicant must be 20 years (upper age limit) to be eligible as per age for NID. 
  • The applicant should not be older than 20 years as of June 30 of the year in which they are planning to take admission to NID.
  • OBC - NCL/SC/ST students must not exceed the age of 22 to be eligible for admission. 
  • PWD students should not be older than 24 years. 

Lower age limit 

  • The general category students must be born on or after July 1, 2001. 
  • OBC, SC and ST students should have been born on or before July 1, 1997, to be eligible for BDes in NID.
  • PWD candidates born on or after July 1, 1996, are eligible for admission. 

Schooling from abroad 

  • Students who have completed their class 12th or equivalent exams from abroad or from a board which is not listed by NID must produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). To assure and confirm that the final exam they have qualified for is equivalent to the class 12 exam conducted in India.

Education 

  • Applicant should have completed their education up to graduation level or equivalent to be eligible for MDes in NID.
  • After completing a 12th or equivalent the undergraduate degree should be of at least a four-year duration in any discipline. The course must be done by a recognised college or university. 
  • The candidates must have passed the bachelor's or undergraduate before May/June of the year they are planning to apply for NID. 

Age limit

  • General category students should have been born on or after July 1, 1992, to be eligible for this course.
  • Reserved category students must be born on or after July 1, 1989 are eligible to apply. 
  • PWD-categorised candidates must be born on or after July 1, 1987, and can apply for this course. 
  • International students born on or after July 1, 1992 are eligible to apply. 

Diploma courses 

  • Students who have done a full-time diploma in Design /Fine Arts / Architecture of a four-year duration can also apply for this program.
  • They must have completed a diploma after class 12 from a recognised board.
  • Candidates should have the diploma examination certificate before May/June of the year they are planning to apply. 

Undergraduate degree of three years duration 

  • Students who have completed a bachelor's degree of three years duration in any discipline are eligible to apply. 
  • They must have done this programme after class 12 or equivalent and should have qualified the same by August of the year they intend to apply at NID. 

Application Process for NID Admissions 2024

After checking if they qualify the NID eligibility criteria, candidates can proceed to fill the NID application form. Check out the steps to apply for NID admissions given below.

Step 1: Go to the official website of NID. 

Step 2: Sign up and login by entering details like nationality, DOB, mobile no., email id, category information etc. 

Step 3: After successful registration, the login credentials will be sent via an email to the registered email address.

Step 4: Log in to the student portal with your credentials such as Login ID and Password.

Step 5: Fill up the NID application form with academic details and personal details. Candidates for M.Des course need to provide work experience while filling up the form. 

Step 6: Upload scanned copies of the required documents and a recent passport-sized photograph. Reserved category candidates need to provide the caste certificate and PwD candidates must upload a valid Disability Certificate issued by a competent medical authority.

Step 7: In the next stage,  pay the NID application fees. The application fee for NID DAT 2024 can be submitted in online mode.

  • Online Mode: The online application fees can be paid via debit card/ credit card/ net banking.

Step 8: Print the application form of NID 2024 and save it for future use. 

NID DAT 2024 Exam Pattern

The NID admission process is carried forward through a design entrance exam conducted by the National Institutes of Design. The exam is called the National Institute of Design - Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT) and it is held once every year for shortlisting candidates for NID admissions.

NID DAT comprises two exams:

  • NID DAT Prelims
  • NID DAT Mains (Studio Test and Personal Interview)

Candidates who qualify the Prelims are allowed to sit for Mains. NID DAT Prelims is a written design aptitude test whereas NID DAT Mains consists of a studio test and a personal interview round.

Selection Process for NID Admissions

  • First, candidates have to apply for admission to the NIDs by filling the NID DAT application form.
  • The candidates who are registered successfully will be given their NID DAT Admit Cards.
  • They have to take the NID DAT Prelims which comprise both objective (MCQs) and subjective questions.
  • After clearing NID DAT Prelims, candidates will be provided their admit cards for NID DAT Mains.
  • In the Mains exam, they will have to appear for a Studio Test followed by a Personal Interview.
  • The final selection of candidates will be made based on their performance in all the rounds, after considering the weightage allocated to each round.
  • They will have to attend the counselling process to finalize their admission.
  • Once the NID DAT results and final merit list is declared, candidates can secure their seat by paying the requisite admission fee. If they fail to do so within the deadline, their admission will be cancelled.

NID Admission Criteria and Counselling Process 2024

Your eligibility for the counselling process depends on your inclusion in the final merit list. The NID DAT 2024 counselling process encompasses four primary stages:

  • Online Approval: Verify your selection and express your willingness to proceed through the counselling process.
  • Document Submission: Upload all necessary documents online to establish your eligibility.
  • Seat Allocation: Based on your merit rank, preferences, and availability, you will be allotted a seat at your preferred NID college.
  • Provisional Admission Offer: Upon successful completion of the previous steps, you will receive a provisional admission offer, securing your place at NID.

NID College Admissions 2024: Allotment of Seat

NID College-wise Admission Process 2024

The admission process for NID Bengaluru includes an entrance test, studio test and interview round. The NID Bengaluru admission form is generally released in October. NID DAT is accepted in this institute. After the completion of DAT prelims, the institute prepares a merit list and based on the ranking of the candidates they are called for the DAT mains. Later on, candidates are selected based on their performance on the DAT. These admission rules are applicable to all the disciplines offered at the institute.

NID Ahmedabad

For B.Des Admission, NID Ahmedabad considers NID DAT. Admission to PhD courses is confirmed based on an entrance test called DRT. The admission process for this course includes different stages like Screening Proposal, DRT and Personal Interview. For  B.Des programmes in this institute are offered in 8 specializations including Film and Video Communication, Animation Film Design and Exhibition Design etc.

NID Gandhinagar

NID Gandhinagar provides regular residential M.Des courses in seven disciplines e.g. Apparel Design, Toy and Game Design, Photography Design etc.

NID Vijaywada

NID of Vijaywada offers only B.Des courses which are of 4 years duration. The admission process is done based on the DAT scores of the candidates. Selected candidates are called for counselling sessions. Admission to this NID college is offered only in three specializations including Industrial Design, Communication Design and Textile and Apparel Design.

NID Bhopal

NID Bhopal also offers B.Des course through DAT prelims and DAT mains exam. For successful candidates, the college has made it mandatory to join a 1-year foundation programme. The choice of discipline is offered to the candidates who successfully complete the foundation programme. Candidates’ merit and choice are considered in regard to this. The total number of seats here is 86.

NID Kurukshetra

The total number of seats for B.Des programme in NID Kurukshetra is 75 equally distributed among three specializations including industrial design, textile and apparel design and communication design. Candidates are admitted through the NID design Aptitude Testa and Studio Test.

NID Jorhat

Among the NID colleges in India, NID Jorhat is of national importance. The Jorhat campus is autonomous in its nature Post completion of the NID DAT, candidates are required to appear in the one-year foundation programme.

NID Scholarships 2024

They offer numerous scholarships to meritorious as well as economically weak students. Some of them cover 100% of tuition fees. Candidates are requested to keep in mind that the scholarships do not cover their stay at their hostels and petty expenses. NID helps candidates in applying for different scholarships. The majority of them can be applied via National Scholarship Portal.
