No changes have been made to the syllabus. As per the CBSE curriculum, there are two subjects for the English Language: English core and English Elective. CBSE Class 12 English Core Syllabus

A descriptive paper will be conducted on 80 marks for the English Core subject and the internal assessment, which includes listening & Speaking skills, will be conducted on 20 marks.

The detailed syllabus for CBSE Class 12 English Core subject is as follows:

Section A

Section A is divided into two parts. Part I of this section consists of the unseen passage while part two contains an unseen case-based passage with statistical data. So this topic is all about extempore. Students are required to read the prescribed books and can refer to the previous year's question papers to practice this portion.

Multiple Choice based questions will be asked on the basis of the unseen passage. This portion will assess the inference skills of a student. So it is advised to practice the unseen passage by following the previous year's question papers.

Section B

This section analyses the creative writing skills of the students. This includes Notice writing, Invitation writing, Letter writing, and Article/Report writing. This portion will assess the Organisation of Ideas and Vocabulary of the students. Again, it is advised to practice more and more by referring to the previous year and sample question papers.

Section C

Section C is based on the comprehensive answer writing on the subjects of prose & poetry. Flamingo and Vistas are the recommended books by the CBSE Board.

This section includes a variety of assessment on the basis of Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Type Questions, Short Answer Type Questions and Long Answer Type Questions which assesses the comprehensive ability & interpretation ability.

Section A: Reading Comprehension

  • Unseen passage (Comprising 10 marks)
  • Case Based Unseen (Statistical) Passage (Comprising 10 marks)

Section B: Creative Writing Skills:

  • Notice Writing in maximum 50 words (Comprising 5 Marks)
  • Invitation writing in maximum 50 words (Comprising 5 Marks)

CBSE Class 12 English Elective Syllabus

A descriptive paper will be conducted on 80 marks for the English Elective and 20 marks are conserved for the seminar, which would involve the articulation clarity of pronunciation.

The detailed syllabus for CBSE Class 12 English Elective subject is as follows:

Section A

This section will assess the reading skills of the students. It comprises two unseen passages and a poem, Three questions will be asked in this section. The questions will be MCQ-type questions based on the information provided in the questions. Students are required to read the prescribed books and can refer to the previous year's question papers to practice this portion.

Section B

This section is based on English Grammar. MCQs involving the transformation of sentences are asked in the exam. students need to practice this portion from the prescribed books. A good understanding of English grammar can help students to score high in this portion. Again, it is advised to practice more and more by referring to the previous year and sample question papers.

Section C

Section C involves the analysis of the writing skills. This portion includes discursive and interpretative writing of three long articles. It also includes the task of essay writing on contemporary topics. Students with good comprehension skills have an upper hand in this portion.

Section D

This section assesses the literature knowledge of the students. Literature here refers to the books recommended by the CBSE Board. The book prescribed by the board as for CBSE Class 12 English Elective course is "Kaleidoscope". Questions in the examination will be asked from this book. Students can refer this book to read the short stories and the poetry.

Section E

Section E is based upon fiction or story writing. Three questions are asked in this part of the board examination. All the three questions are based on a Novel recommended by the CBSE Board. The book prescribed by the board for CBSE Class 12 English Elective course for fiction is "A Tiger for Malgudi" or "The Financial Expert" by R.K. Narayan. Students can refer to any one of the given novels as questions in the examination will be asked from these books only.
