CBSE Class 12th English Chapter 3 - The Enemy: In CBSE Class 12 English Vistas book, the chapter 3 includes a story related to World War. Written by Pearl S. Buck, an American writer, the story talks about profession and humanity. Which is more important?
The story was set in Japan during the second world war. An injured American army man reaches the beach, where a Japanese surgeon, Dr. Sadao Hoki finds him. The doctor got into a dilemma whether to hand over the soldier to the Japanese army, or to leave him to die, or to throw him back into the sea, or to save his life. Finally, he decides to take him home, provide the right medication, and save his life. His wife and servants opposed his idea. The servants left and the family life also got disturbed. Yet, Dr Sadao provided shelter to the soldier, provided him with the necessary care and saved his life. Out of fear, Dr Sadao discusses the incident with a general in the Japanese military. The general came up with the plan to get the soldier killed by hired killers.
Eventually, Dr. Sadao made an attempt to save the soldier by arranging a boat to reach the nearby island. He provided the soldier with the required food and clothing till he found a way to the Korean fishing boat, as they will help him rescue. In the end, Dr. Sardao remembers all the white faces he knew (when he lived in America). He kept standing and thought about why he could not kill him.
From the chapter, students will have to answer a variety of questions. Some of the questions are given below. Students can practice answering these questions to easily attempt all questions in board exams. The questions can be asked for a different range of marks. Take a look at them.
