"Lost Spring" is a thought-provoking story, where the author describes her two interactions with poor children. Her first first encounter was with a rag picker boy named Saheb – E – Alam who migrated from Bangladesh in 1971. He used to look for ‘valuables’ in the garbage. Even a coin or torn shoes were treated like gold by him. It was difficult for him to manage basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and education. The second encounter was with Mukesh (belonging to a family of bangle makers), who dreamt of becoming a car mechanic. Due to the fear of police and middlemen, his elders could never start any other business and were satisfied with their work. Similarly, Mukesh had to follow the same path and forget his dream. The author focuses on the poverty issue and how children are driven away from their dreams in the story.
